With SS19 hot upon us, brands, designers and buyers are all vying for our attention ready to set the tone for our summer wardrobes.Recent week's fashion shows have already hinted at some of the biggest trends set to take off this season, some of them we’ve seen before *cough cough* tie dye, while others are making their debut. We’ve pulled together a couple of our favourite looks that you can translate onto your nails to stay on trend this season.Tie Die DreamsThought you’d said goodbye to tie dye in the 90s? Think again. Riya Hamid Takes Over ISLA

Riya Hamid Takes Over ISLA

In celebration of International Women’s Day (which TBH we think should actually be errrrry day) our gal Riya Hamid is teaming up with Beats by Dr Dre to take over ISLA on 7th March! Artist and poet Riya, splits her time between her native New York and new home here in Berlin. Her work explores the "nuances of brown femininity and the dynamics of class + haziness of identity - synthesising memories from childhood as an immigrant from Bangladesh with contemporary reflections on interpersonal relationships, longing, and all that is ordinary," she explains on her website. View this post on Instagram A post shared by রিয়া (@riyahamid) on Oct 21, 2018 at 6:06am PDT Busy traveling between cities in the lead up to her event, we were lucky enough to steal some of Riya's time to get a sneak peak into her life and what she has planned for IWD. What can we expect from your store takeover at the ISLA x Beats By Dr Dre event? "A wholesome art-filled experience in good company. I always find these things straining to categorize, but most of my work stems from trying to understand the symbiotic distance between self and the external." How would you describe your artwork and poetry in 3 words?  "Lucid, nostalgic, inconsistent." What emotions tend to sway you between your artwork and poetry? Do you identify the two mediums as separate outlets to express the way you’re feeling?  "I find that I can draw casually and be amused by the trajectory of my fingers— it’s very therapeutic, but writing is usually cathartic and more sensory. I find it more difficult to write than to draw, and I know the comparison is wholly unnecessary— but poetry is the purest art form."  What do your friends and family back home, think of your artwork and poetry? "My friends are my family, and they believe in me even when I don’t."  What is it about Berlin that enticed you away from New York? Is there anything in particular that the Berlin scene has that you feel New York doesn’t?  "As a native New Yorker who experienced gentrification unfold to the extreme, I could no longer justify sacrificing my mental wellbeing for something as basic as a roof, but Berlin is a special little place that I cozy up to a little more each day. There’s a greater barrier between people and capitalism here, which is why it attracts so many creatives who can really sustain themselves without getting into a burn-out robotic frenzy." Come by on 7th March to experience Riya's work, catch up with friends, and celebrate being the strong independent women we are. You'll also get to enjoy some complimentary treats: nails, tooth gems and a limited edition illustration.   On the night there'll be music from the ISLA network including LINNÉA, Laura Clock, and AUCO, with an afterparty at PRIVATCLUB from 10pm til late. Check out our Facebook event for more info and invite your gal pals, see you there!

Are you making these nail mistakes?

Are you making these nail mistakes?

If you’re settling in for a night of self-care and your nails are in need of a lil lovin, before grabbing that trusty old nail file of yours, make sure to check out these nail do’s and don’ts...✅Do keep your cuticles moisturised Cuticles, they’re a bit confusing aren’t they - what are they and why do we need them? Well, that soft squidgy lining protects the nail bed from all the bacteria our hands pick up throughout the day. For this reason, unless the cuticles are overgrown or as requested by a client, we opt to push them back rather than cut them away. Keeping your cuticles in good condition, that means moisturising on the reg with cuticle oil, will prevent them from cracking and peeling which can lead to nail bed damage. 🚫Don’t bite your nails Nail biting is an addictively bad habit that can be a nightmare to break. Not only does nail biting cause damage to the nail bed, but it also exposes you to all the bacteria that’s hiding up under your nails.✅Do take vitamins to keep your nails on fleek Many of us suffer from naturally weak or brittle nails, but that doesn’t mean we’ve got to live with it. There are plenty of supplements you can take to promote healthy nail growth including Vitamin B12, Iron, and Folic Acid. 🚫Don’t skip the base coat When giving yourself an at home mani it’s tempting to skip the base coat and go straight to the colour, but this can discolour your nails and shorten the lifespan of your manicure.  ✅Do apply a top coat, as well as that trusty base coat The secret to a long lasting manicure is to seal the colour with a high quality top coat, our favourite is Seche Vite which we use in-store. 🚫Don’t peel off your polish or Shellac Just like nail biting, it can be oh-so-tempting to start picking away at your Shellac once it starts to lift. But this removes layers of your actual nail and can cause long-lasting damage, so it’s best to head back to the salon to get a proper removal.✅Do book in for the real thing Speaking of Shellac, make sure you book into a salon that’s using the real deal, just like we do here at ISLA. With its rise in popularity, Shellac has become somewhat of an umbrella term for all gel manicures - but that’s not the case. Many salons which claim to be using Shellac are actually using poor knock offs which aren’t healthy for your nails. Your manicurist should only be using high quality gel products, such as CND or Gel Bottle, plus a UV lamp. 🚫Don’t allow electric nail files to be used on your gel manicure Electric nail files are bad news for your nails and can leave lasting damage that can take a long time to repair. You won’t find any electric files here at ISLA, we do all our work by hand, ensuring to protect your nails and promote healthy growth. For more information see our story highlights over on Instagram.✅Do consider how your diet is affecting your nails Our diet affects everything from the way we look to the way we feel. That includes our nails too, and there are plenty of ways to tell how your diet is impacting the health of your nails. Very pale nails point to anaemia which means you need to increase your iron intake, whilst nails that break easy could be a result of a calcium deficiency. Still got some nail related questions? Slide into our DM’s over on the ISLA Instagram and we’ll be happy to answer! Don’t forget, here at ISLA we only use the very best quality products and our nail techs are trained to give your nails the extra TLC they need to promote healthy growth and keep those talons in top condition.

Nails - The new fashion week look

Nails - The new fashion week look

Say goodbye to the nude nails you're used to seeing on the catwalks and hello to sparkly masterpieces ready to steal the show. Once kept simple and minimalist, nails were overlooked by design teams so as not to detract from the fashion on show. But more and more frequently designers are choosing to incorporate nails into their looks to pull together a strong collection aesthetic. Our friends over at Hardeman set the trend in motion last year with the help of 3D extravaganza designer Nails By Juan. The abstract 3D nails intertwine with the clothes to create a kooky and quirky aesthetic.
